Alongside his siblings, he learned the values of hard work by observing his parents, Francis and Lottie Shaw. His father, a successful entrepreneur, served as an inspiring role model for James, demonstrating perseverance and innovation in business.

Sports were an integral part of James’ childhood. He played hockey on frozen ponds in winter and enjoyed volleyball in summer. He was also an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. After high school, James attended Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. In 1958, he began his career as a manager at Shaw Pipe Protection Limited in Hamilton, a company owned by his father. He frequently traveled to oversee operations at new facilities in Regina and Edmonton.

Founding Telecommunications Companies

In the early 1960s, Shaw moved to Edmonton, drawn by the city’s work ethic and abundant opportunities. By then, he was married with three children.

Upon arriving, James noticed a lack of television signals in the province. Having lived near the U.S. border, he was accustomed to accessing multiple channels from Detroit and Buffalo. In 1966, Shaw founded Capital Cable Television Co. Ltd., addressing Alberta’s growing demand for diverse channel options. At the time, cable television was still an emerging industry. Despite initial regulatory and technological challenges, James remained determined. By 1970, he secured a broadcasting license, and in 1971, his company connected its first customer. Over the next three decades, it evolved into Shaw Communications Inc., becoming one of Canada’s largest and most successful communications enterprises.

By 1996, Shaw Communications served 1.5 million cable customers. Today, valued at $9 billion, the company provides Canadians with broadband cable TV and high-speed internet services.

In 1999, Shaw founded Corus Entertainment Inc., specializing in radio and television programming. It quickly became Canada’s largest specialty media company, with 34 television services, 39 radio stations, and 15 television channels.

Building a Business Legacy

James also lived a life of luxury, owning properties including a Hawaiian mansion and a home in Prince Rupert, where he spent time with family and friends.

The influence of his father extended beyond business. In 1970, James established the Shaw Foundation, aimed at improving the quality of life for Canadians. As its president and director, he made significant contributions to various charities and fostered corporate social responsibility within Shaw Communications Inc. Under his leadership, the company supported initiatives ranging from educational technology for schools to child protection programs and affordable housing projects.

In 1998, James handed over the leadership of Shaw Communications to his eldest son, Jim, who grew the company’s market capitalization to $2.2 billion and transformed it into a telecommunications empire.

Supporting Charitable Initiatives

James’ philanthropic influence extended across Alberta. He spearheaded fundraising campaigns for organizations like the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

He also played a pivotal role in advancing Alberta’s post-secondary education system. As chairman of the Board of Governors at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Shaw championed initiatives to expand educational opportunities.

Recognition and Legacy

James held an honorary diploma in Business Administration from NAIT and honorary doctorates from several universities.
