Bell attended Ridley College and later the University of Alberta. After graduating from university in 1975, he continued his medical studies at Magdalen College, Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1982, he secured a position as a Clinical Research Fellow in Immunology at Stanford University, where he focused on histocompatibility antigens and autoimmune diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1987, Bell decided to return to Oxford, becoming a Senior Clinical Research Fellow for the Wellcome Trust and joining the Institute of Molecular Medicine. In 1992, Bell was appointed Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Bell is an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College and a senior member of the Oxford University Women&#8217;s Boat Club committee. He also conducted pivotal research that elucidated the interactions of T-cells, which play a key role in activating the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond this, John Bell actively worked on the biomedical applications of high-throughput genomic technologies. He also participated in the UK government&#8217;s &#8220;100,000 Genomes Project,&#8221; which focused on researching rare diseases, common cancers, and infectious diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_Ventures\"><\/span>Other Ventures<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>John Bell also serves as a director at Roche, a global healthcare company specializing in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. For a significant period, the company worked to make research results from the antiviral drug oseltamivir available to researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bell is also on the board of directors of the American biotechnology company Genentech. Furthermore, Bell was the founder of three biotechnology companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Bell dedicates considerable time to philanthropic projects. His roles in the charity sector include voting on the board of trustees for the Oxford Health Alliance. Bell is also a trustee of the Rhodes Trust and a member of the Gairdner Foundation. He has received numerous awards for his scientific and medical contributions.
