Who Was William Wagner?
William F. Wagner was born on May 1, 1899, in Edmonton to parents Amelia and Philip. His childhood was shaped by the rapidly changing face of the city—he even rode Edmonton’s first streetcar and attended the city’s first motion picture screening while growing up and attending school on Queen’s Avenue.
Wagner’s career in education was distinguished: he served as Edmonton’s first school counselor, followed by roles as a principal, assistant superintendent, and deputy superintendent. In 1955, he was appointed Superintendent of Edmonton Schools, overseeing a period of unprecedented growth in both student and teacher populations. Throughout his career, William earned his Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, and Master of Education degrees from the University of Alberta. In 1982, the university awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of his lifelong dedication to educational excellence.
Following William Wagner’s retirement in 1964, the school building was constructed on land adjacent to a park and street named in his honor. The school opened in 1969, bearing his name. Originally a vocational school, it was transformed into a school of science and technology in 1991.
