Founding History
Established in 1926, AUArts has a long and fascinating history. From its inception, it has made significant contributions to Canadian culture. Initially founded as a college, it provided world-class education to students, supported by renowned faculty who helped cultivate generations of professionals.
Originally known as the Alberta College of Art, the institution was part of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Although the two campuses remain adjacent, the art university has officially separated from the technical institute.
This separation marked its transition into an autonomous institution, with funding provided by the government.
Milestones in the University’s Development
- 1958: The university established a gallery, later renamed the Illingworth Kerr Gallery in honour of a former director.
- 1960: AUArts operated as the Alberta College of Art (ACA), functioning as the art faculty of SAIT.
- 1983: The college moved to a purpose-built facility near the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
- 1985: ACA formally separated from SAIT, becoming an independent, state-funded university.
- 1995: The college received accreditation to grant Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees and rebranded as Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD), distinguishing itself in the field of design education.
- 2000: The institution launched a Bachelor of Design program.
- 2015: ACAD introduced a Master of Fine Arts program, welcoming its first graduate students as part of its mission to be a leader in education, research, creative exploration, and cultural development.
- 2018: The Alberta government officially recognized the institution’s high-quality programs, announcing its transition to university status.
- 2019: The institution adopted its current name and visual identity, becoming Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts).
Membership in AICAD
AUArts is a full member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD), a nonprofit consortium of leading art schools in the United States and Canada. AICAD was founded by a group of university presidents who recognized the need for collaboration among art institutions. The mission of AICAD is to strengthen its member institutions, both individually and collectively, and to inform the public about the value of studying art and design.
